Is being nervous a good excuse for treating people badly?

Anyone can have a tough day, or many. Sometimes we do, and we end up saying things we regret to the people we love just because we're feeling on edge. We can behave erratically and mistreast the people around us, leaving them feeling confused and hurt. We try that it doesnt turn into a recurrent type of behavior, since we want to keep our relationships intact, but form time to time it happens. When it does we make a conscious effort to apologize and reassure the person we hurt, and we make the promise of never doing it again.

We can't always keep that promise, but we certainly do our best to treat our friends and family with kindness. Which is why it's so shocking when other people don't seem to act in the same way or don't give enough importance to their loved ones feelings.

A niece shared her experience on AITAH with an aunt and her husband who didn't care much about her feelings. She arrived at a family gathering one day, and tripped and fell on the entrance of the house, so she went inside to get cleaned up before saying hi to the family. Whe she went out, the aunt's husband, John, chastised her about her manners an how no matter what had happened at the entrance, she was supposes to say hello to the whole family before anything else. From then on, he started giving her the cold shoulder, and her aut pretty much did the same. They even accused her of playing the victim the one time she brough it up. This went on for months until one day, the aunt started treating her as she had done before, inviting her everywhere and pretending that no one had done or said anything hurtful. Her mother suggested she played along because her aunt was going through a rough moment, but she's not sure she wants to pretend they didn't hurt her.

What do you think? Should she just play along or is she right in asking for an explanation?

since I was a kid, and we used to be very close. We'd spend hours talking about movies, TV shows, books, and the stories I like to write. Everything changed last year.

At my aunt's birthday, I arrived before almost everyone else. I tripped, scraped both knees badly, and they were bloding. I said hi, hugged my aunt, and told her I'd clean my

knees first, then come back to hug John and my brother. Instead, John came over and called me disrespectful and r de, saying I should greet everyone no matter what. I tried to

explain, but he kept repeating himself, so apologized. After that day, he completely changed. For over a year, he wouldn't greet me unless I greeted him first. Whenever I tried

talking about things we used to enjoy, he'd give short answers and immediately talk to someone else. Eventually, I stopped trying. I still greeted him, but I kept my distance because I didn't want family drama.

Three months ago, I finally told my mom everything. She said she'd never noticed because I'd always acted normally. A month ago, after a party at our house, my aunt and

John came to pick up leftover food. I had just woken up, was half asleep, and forgot to say It was ride, but unintentional. John said nothing, but my aunt got furious, later texted hi.

me demanding an apology, and called me disrespectful. I got angry because I'd made one mistake, while John had been treating me that way for over a year. She insisted he'd never

done that and accused me of always playing the victim. I apologized anyway. After that, she started giving me the cold shoulder. My mom defended them even though she knew the

whole story. Later she apologized, admitted she'd forgotten what I'd told her, and asked me to act normally at my cousin's birthday so she could observe John herself.

At the party, both my aunt and John greeted my mom while completely ignoring me. My aunt barely spoke to me all day, and John actively avoided being wherever I was. The next day, my mom admitted she had seen it.

A few days later, my aunt found out she had thyroid nodules. My mom thought that explained why she'd been so stressed. Thankfully, the tests came back fine. Right after

that, my aunt suddenly started inviting me over, bringing me food I like, and asking my mom to convince me to come to family gatherings.

This Saturday, I told my mom I was exhausted. I understand my aunt was scared, but stress doesn't justify treating me like a scapegoat. My mom now says my aunt is trying, and I'm

pushing her away. I asked why my aunt gets endless excuses because she wants to "keep the family together," but when I protect myself, I'm suddenly the problem. She even claimed

my aunt had never treated me coldly, despite admitting it herself before. I don't want to keep explaining myself. AITA for refusing to act like nothing happened?
